Micro-moments have the power to fuel macro change. Our event series, ‘The Postcard Picnic’, aims to empower young people across New Zealand to mobilise their skills, strengths, and creativity to make a meaningful difference in their local communities, through bite-sized volunteer tasks, known as ‘microvolunteering’.
Specifically, through this event series, we will …
– Connect with young people throughout the motu prior to Youth Week, and invite them to submit their own artwork/designs/photos to us
– Print a selection of these designs onto postcards
– Packs of 100 postcards will then be distributed to up to 20 high schools, universities, and other youth-facing community organisations
– Empower aspiring young leaders within each of these organisations to facilitate their own event during Youth Week – bringing their own community together to write kind messages on the postcards
After Youth Week, these postcards will be hand-delivered by young people to lonely residents in local rest homes, as a way to let residents know that they are not alone
Doing so will provide young people with the opportunity to mobilise their leadership to help bridge the intergenerational divide and counteract the growing issue of isolation and loneliness amongst elderly populations.
