Te Whai trust offers opportunities for Rangatahi to engage with creative and scoial opportunities within the community. Youth in our community don't have many neutral spaces in which to meet or be and have been advocating for a formal youth space for some time. Young people that are not intersetd in surfing or skating have very limited places to go that is not home or school. Through engaging with Rangatahi we have identified that they would like to have an opportunity to meet in spaces where they can cook and eat food, play games- like ping pong, kubb, board games, cards, watch movies, play music, use computers, sewing machines and creative materials and learn practical skills like photography, photo shop, bike maintenance, CV writing & job applications etc. . Our planned youth week events are a series of pop up sessions in existing community locations- such as the library, museum, old school house, art gallery, hall (psaces where young people dont often access- in order to offer young people access to these activites and spaces, learn new skills from experts in their fields and evidence need and types of uses for a community youth space to the Kaipara council.
