EVENT

Kaikōura Youth Week Celebration

Kaikōura Youth Council is planning to put on three events for our only High School.
On the Monday 15th May, we will be hosting a chalk activity during lunchtime where the students will get an opportunity to make a positive affirmation mural on the side of the Kaikōura High School gym wall.
On Wednesday 17th, we will host a schoolwide game of Crash Bang Cricket in the school gym where house points will be appointed.
On Friday 19th (Pink Shirt Day), we are planning on running a half day event and will be covering the school in pink decorations and providing pink costume items for students and teachers. During lunchtime the senior students will run Jump Jam, the other youth council members will be running a free sausage sizzle and have a candy floss machine running. After Jump Jam, the whole school will meet outside of the gym for a 15 minute Q&A where two local Nurses, a Doctor and a Social Worker will be asked anonymous questions that have been handed in over the week in our three suggestion and question boxes at the high school. These questions will be about physical and mental health. The students will all then be split up for Four-way Capture the Flag and an obstacle course.

During the entire week, there will be different messages daily, in the school notices and during morning tea and lunchtimes, about promoting youth agency and anti-bullying "be an upstander'.

What we hope to achieve with these activities and events is to build healthy connections between the students, provide informative fun and build mana and confidence within our young people. At the high school, we currently have a bad bullying problem which makes our young people feel unsafe and is causing students to stop attending school. We hope that with our Youth Week events, we can make a definitive step towards repairing the relations of our young people, build mana and make our high school a bit more safer for our youth.
