I am a woman of Afro-Dominican and French descent who was born in London and moved to New Zealand with my husband and 3 children in 2006. I am a granddaughter, a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a wife, a mother, and a grandmother. My supervision style has evolved to a bi-cultural model which focuses on Ahurutanga/safe space to be oneself, manaakitanga as a strength based approach that notices and encourages different perspectives and whakapapa to recognise the importance of culture, history and identity. This model is influenced by psychoanalytical thinking based on my experiences and learnings in the social work environment. The purpose of supervision/kaitiakitanga is to provide a space where Kaimahi can speak freely, recognise how they learnt to be experts from their cultural worldview, and feel supported to focus on self-reflection and well-being.
